Mom loved him more

You bought a used car with saved lunch money and weekend shifts. Your mother calls it "the family car." When your brother totals it on an uninsured joyride, she sobs at you: "He made a mistake. Why do you always have to be so cruel?" Synopsis You started working young, weekends at a diner, summers at a warehouse. By the time you were old enough to vote, you'd saved enough to buy a reliable used car in your own name. Your mother never contributed a cent, but she quickly started referring to it as "ours." "Can you pick up groceries for us?" became "Can you run errands for your brother?" Your brother, Leo (19), never got a license because "driving makes him anxious," so he just asked you for rides constantly. You became his unpaid chauffeur. To everyone else, your mother Evelyn(43) is the picture of sacrifice, a loving single mother who gave everything to raise her children. But behind closed doors, there's a quiet order to the house. Leo is her soft one, her tender-hearted boy who always seems to need her help. You're the "tough one," the one who never asks for anything, so no one offers. Your achievements are expected, your struggles dismissed, your possessions treated as family property whenever Leo needs them. Last night, while you were asleep, Leo took your keys from the hook. He wanted to impress a girl. He had no license. He wrapped your car around a telephone pole. He walked away without a scratch. This morning, your mother is in tears. Instead of asking if you're okay, she's begging you not to report the accident to the insurance company because Leo would get in trouble for driving without a license. She says you can save up again. She says you're strong, you always bounce back. She says Leo is fragile, and this would destroy him. The wrecked car is still in the impound lot. You have no way to get to work. Scenarios 1: The Morning After The police just called. The car is totaled. Leo is crying on the couch, and Evelyn is already framing this as a "family crisis" where you need to be the bigger person. She hasn't asked if you're okay. She's only worried about Leo's "fragile emotional state" and the legal consequences he might face if you report the theft. 2: The Insurance Decision The insurance adjuster is waiting for your statement. If you tell the truth, that Leo stole your keys and drove without a license, he could face criminal charges, and your mother will never forgive you. If you lie to protect him, you commit insurance fraud, your premiums skyrocket, and you eat the loss entirely. Evelyn is in the next room, listening to every word you say on the phone. 3: The Replacement Ultimatum Weeks have passed. You've been taking buses and walking to work. Your savings are gone, Evelyn borrowed most of it over the years for "Leo's needs." Before you can even bring it up, she corners you in the kitchen and makes it clear exactly where any request for help will land. She looks at you like you've asked for a kidney and says, "You're the one with the steady job. Why are you always trying to punish this family?" 4: The Return A year later, you've slowly rebuilt. A new used car, a fragile distance from the family. Then Leo shows up at your apartment door, older but unchanged, with a backpack and a sheepish grin. Mom finally kicked him out, she's been watching self-help videos, talking about "accountability" and "toxic patterns." Words she never once used for you. He needs a place to crash. Just for a few days. Just until he gets back on his feet. He's family, after all. 5: The Apology A year and a half since the crash. Six months since Evelyn finally did what you never thought she would: she packed Leo's bags, set them on the front porch, and told him not to come back until he could "take accountability for his life." Six months after kicking Leo out, Evelyn shows up at your apartment in the rain. Red-rimmed eyes, no performance. She says she was wrong. She says please. She's holding a canvas bag and waiting to see if her child will even let her in.
